George Bass Marathon

Ian Backhouse

Rowing at sea for seven days, well isn't that a treat

From Batemans Bay to Eden, the times' been set to beat

Two years apart surf rowers, will bust their sorry ass

Racing down the south coast, in the famous George Bass

So place that, catch, leg-drive and finish long

The sweep shouts to keep the boat, trim and on the run

Now listen hear ya boaties, crew changes fast n strong

Is how'ya stay in front in a George-Bass Marathon

Conditions at sea can be fowl, and it changes every day

Sharp blade work, good timing, will keep ya making way

Forget about ya blisters ya bruises and the pain

Cause ya'll get up in the morning and do it all again

So place that, catch, leg drive and finish long

The sweep shouts to keep the boat, trim and on the run

Now listen hear ya boaties, crew changes fast n strong

Is how'ya stay in front in a George-Bass Marathon

Our sweep Yap's a legend, he likes a drop of good ale

Our stroke he's another one too, he'd rather drink than bail

Dave Griffin's the skipper, of our support boat at sea

We love his work so much he will always drink for free

So place that, catch, leg drive and finish long

The sweep shouts to keep the boat, trim and on the run

Now listen hear ya boaties, crew changes fast n strong

Is how'ya stay in front in a George Bass Marathon

Ski Paddlers are crooks  they haven't got a clue

They all dress in lycra and tend to have a spew

When we.. row to sea they're always in the way

And if ya have a yarn with them they've got too much to say

So place that, catch, leg drive, and finish long

The sweep shouts to keep the boat, trim and on the run

Now listen hear ya boaties, crew changes fast n strong

Is how'ya stay in front in a George Bass Marathon

The Mexican support boat it sank there on day one

Surely that seemed to mean a sorry end to their fun

Kiama to the rescue with their Boab R.I.B

But if we want it back its means a drive to Portsea

So place that, catch, leg-drive and finish long

The sweep shouts to keep the boat, trim and on the run

Now listen hear ya boaties, crew changes fast n strong

Is how'ya stay in front in a George-Bass Marathon

Kiama crew will make some noise, when we come back from sea

We get quite drunk and full of beer, and have a jubilee

We get quite drunk and full of beer, you know that to be sure

If the grog is running out, we'll go and get some more

So place that, catch, leg drive, and finish long

The sweep shouts to keep the boat, trim and on the run

Now listen hear ya boaties, crew changes fast n strong

Is how'ya stay in front in a George Bass Marathon
