The Lonely Lighthouse Keeper

Cliff Ball

Who are those who light the lamp

That brave the wind and weather

That warn the ships which sail the coast

That keep us all together

A solitary life on a remote cape

With winds that howl and whine

Sometimes they cease

And the Sun breaks through

To offer weak sunshine

The night is long, his knees complain

And the stairs a little steeper

He climbs to the top to light the lamp

The lonely lighthouse keeper

There's records to keep

And books to read

And flowers to grow in the Lee

A wounded bird that has broken it's wing

And watch the foaming sea

Mail and supplies

Will come once a month

But the landing is hard to reach

So they pull the oars

And look for the gap

That will lead to the sheltered beach

The night is long, his knees complain

And the stairs a little steeper

He climbs to the top to light the lamp

The lonely lighthouse keeper

On watch in the night

You look for the light

That will help you to steer your way

No rocks and no reefs

The lighthouse will keep you safe

For another day

The night is long, his knees complain

And the stairs a little steeper

He climbs to the top to light the lamp

The lonely lighthouse keeper
