Balad of the Pevensey

Heave away, lads, let her roll,
Pevensey’s bound for a distant shoal.
Steam and river, fire and tide,
Down the Murray we shall ride!
From Echuca’s dock we set our course,
Woodfire burning, full of force.
Wool bales stacked and deckhands true,
Through the mist, the whistle blew.
Heave away, lads, let her roll,
Pevensey’s bound for a distant shoal.
Steam and river, fire and tide,
Down the Murray we shall ride!
Oh, the paddle churns, the flag flies high,
Murray’s waters rolling by.
The redgum banks and golden light,
Guide us forth into the night.
Heave away, lads, let her roll,
Pevensey’s bound for a distant shoal.
Steam and river, fire and tide,
Down the Murray we shall ride!
She was Philadelphia, proud and bold,
On the screen her tale was told.
But to the river she belongs,
In her wake, we sing our songs.
Heave away, lads, let her roll,
Pevensey’s bound for a distant shoal.
Steam and river, fire and tide,
Down the Murray we shall ride!
Through the narrows, past the bends,
Where the river never ends.
Raise a glass and shout with cheer,
For old Pevensey still steams here!
Heave away, lads, let her roll,
Pevensey’s bound for a distant shoal.
Steam and river, fire and tide,
Down the Murray we shall ride!
